Let's look at the main types of solids control equipment you'll actually need, how they work together, and a few things we'd tell a friend before buying.
Why Bother with Proper Solids Control?
Simple. Dirty mud means:
- Slower drilling (more time on location)
- Worn-out pumps and seals
- More chemical and water usage
- Hauling away more waste
Good solids control equipment keeps the clean mud going back downhole. You reuse more, dilute less, and your rig runs smoother. It's not glamorous, but it pays for itself fast.
The Main Pieces of Solids Control Equipment (No Fluff)
1. Shale Shaker: The Gatekeeper
This is the first thing the mud hits after coming up from the wellbore. Mud shale shaker separates the big chunks, typically anything over 75 microns or so. Our shakers use linear motion or balanced elliptical drive. You can adjust the deck angle from flat to about 5 degrees. G-force can go up to 8.0 if needed.
What matters most? The screens. Use API-compliant screens from 20 to 325 mesh. Change them before they tear. A torn screen lets big solids through and overloads everything downstream. We see that mistake all the time.
2. Desanders & Desilters: Getting the Fine Stuff Out
After the shale shaker, the mud still has fine sand and silt. That's where hydrocyclones come in. Desanders (typically 10‑ or 12‑inch cones) cut down to around 45 microns. Desilters (4‑ or 5‑inch cones) go finer – about 15 microns.
We use polyurethane cones with replaceable liners. They last longer than ceramic in most applications. Some clients ask for vacuum‑assisted cyclones; those help when you have tricky, gas-cut mud. But for most jobs, standard hydrocyclones do the job just fine.
3. Centrifuge: The Heavy Lifter for Ultra‑Fine Solids
If you want to recover barite or de‑water your waste, you need decanter centrifuge. It's the most expensive piece of solids control equipment on your tank, but it’s also the most capable. Cut point can go down to 2–7 microns.
We put VFDs on our centrifuges so you can adjust bowl speed and differential speed on the fly. Different mud systems need different settings. Being able to dial it in without changing sheaves is big help.
One tip: don't run the centrifuge all the time if you don't need to. It saves power and wear. Use it when solids build up past a certain limit.
4. Mud Cleaner: When You Have Weighted Mud
The mud cleaner is just a set of desander and desilter cones mounted over a fine‑mesh shaker. It's useful for weighted mud systems (barite or hematite). The idea is to discard low‑gravity solids while keeping the valuable weighting material in the system.
We offer mud cleaners as compact, manifolded units. They save deck space and reduce piping work. But honestly? If you have a good centrifuge, you might not need a mud cleaner. Depends on your mud program.
5. Vacuum Degasser: Getting the Gas Out
Gas-cut mud is dangerous and messes up your rheology. Vacuum degasser pulls the mud into a low‑pressure chamber, lets the gas break out, and sends clean mud back to the tank. Our degassers handle up to 1000 GPM. Mount it right over the mud tank and keep it ready. You won't need it every day, but when you do, you really need it.
6. Pumps: The Unseen Heroes
Centrifugal pumps feed all the above equipment. If they fail, nothing works. We use hard‑iron or rubber‑lined impellers depending on how abrasive your mud is. For mixing chemicals and polymers, our shear pumps hydrate powders quickly without breaking polymer chains. That's a detail you appreciate when mixing gel or PAC.

Building a System That Matches Your Rig
No two drilling operations are exactly alike. Hole size, depth, mud type, weather, and environmental rules all affect which solids control equipment you should put on location.

- Check shaker screens at every tour change. A small tear grows fast.
- Look at desilter cone apexes. If they're worn oval, replace them.

- Keep grease in the bearings. Follow the schedule, not your memory.
- Keep mud tank levels steady. Surging kills cyclone efficiency.
